Overview

Online Cree Dictionary offers you a way to search through four valuable Cree Language Dictionaries:

• Alberta Elders' Cree Dictionary, Earle Waugh
• Alberta Elders' Cree Dictionary English-Cree
• Cree: Words, Arok Wolvengrey
• Hobbema Language Committee
• Maskwacis Dictionary (Maskwacees College)

Your search can be done in English and Cree in both Roman Orthography and Cree Syllabics.

Getting Started

You can find the basic search box on the main page. Type a word or phrase into the search box and click "Search" button.

If your search input is in Cree use “Choose language” drop down menu to set the input language. You can use Ctr+Shift combination to switch input system between Standard Roman Orthography and Cree Syllabics. If you search input is in Cree Syllabics we recommend to use Virtual Keyboard.

Virtual keyboard allows inputting Cree Syllabics characters. It also allows input Standard Roman Orthography macron characters. You can switch layout of the keyboard to a different Cree dialect using “Switch dialect” drop-down menu

You can set your personal settings so they apply every time you search the Online Dictionary. These settings include the number of results to display, and selection of resources to search in. Just click the "Options" link above the search box.

As you type, it suggests Online Dictionary articles that match your text. A suggestion consists of two parts suggested word of phrase and acronym defining source of the suggested item in brackets.

Search results page can contain a list of results, dictionary article or “No Results” if search returned no results.

When you get a list of matching word article each item of the list consists of following fields.

Cree word in Standard Roman Orthography script that links to the corresponding dictionary article (e.g. atim), plural form of the word (e.g. pl. atimawak ), if available, word in Cree Syllabics script (e.g. ), grammatical indicator (NA - animate noun), English translation, acronym to define source of the file (AE - Alberta Elders Dictionary), list of attached media files (image, sound, video).

Dictionary article

Word article may have additional fields and information. Use tabs in top left corner of an article to switch between Standard and Extended view. In Extended view you can review media resources, see usage examples and other information related to the word.
